What Is Junkfood Survivors?

Junkfood Survivors is a 2D top-down survival game made as a school group project by the Pandemonium Studios team (dropsleutel, GSL, Mikore0, rxinwater, CybrSpirit). It's free to play directly in your browser on itch.io.

The premise is delightfully silly: you play as a brave piece of Broccoli in a world overrun by junk food. Your goal is to fight off endless waves of unhealthy enemies — hamburgers, french fries, soda cans, and pizza slices — and survive as long as possible. It's a classic bullet-heaven survival formula with a healthy (literally) twist.

As you defeat enemies, you collect XP orbs and level up, choosing from random upgrades that enhance your abilities. The game gets progressively harder as more and stronger enemies spawn. How long can you keep Broccoli alive?

How to Play Junkfood Survivors

Move and survive: Use WASD to navigate your broccoli character around the arena. Your character automatically attacks nearby enemies — you don't need to aim or click to attack. The key is positioning: stay away from large groups while still collecting XP from defeated enemies.

Level up and choose upgrades: Each time you level up, you're presented with a choice of 3 random upgrades. These can increase your damage, speed, attack range, or add special effects like area damage or projectiles. Choose wisely — your build determines how far you'll get.

Survive the timer: Each run has a survival timer. Make it to the end and you face a boss. Beat the boss to win. Die before the timer runs out and you start over. The game tracks your best survival time and high score.

Controls

  • Move: WASD
  • Auto-attack: Automatic when near enemies
  • Pause: Escape or P
  • Restart: R after death

Tips and Tricks

Keep moving. Standing still is a death sentence. Enemies converge on your position, and the ones that reach you drain health fast. Always be in motion, circling the edges of the arena.

Prioritize speed upgrades. Early on, prioritize movement speed and attack speed upgrades. Speed lets you dodge enemy clusters, and faster attacks mean more kills and more XP.

Don't chase enemies. Let enemies come to you. Your job is to position yourself so that enemies approach through areas you've already cleared. Running into unexplored territory means facing fresh waves without backup.

Farm the early waves. The first few waves are easy. Use them to build up your upgrade stack before the difficulty ramps up. Don't rush — let enemies come in steady streams and collect every XP orb.

Area damage is king. As the screen fills with enemies, single-target damage becomes less useful. Pick area damage upgrades whenever they appear. Being surrounded is fine if everything around you is taking damage.

The boss requires burst. When the boss spawns, all regular enemies are temporarily cleared. Use this window to focus all your damage on the boss. If you've built for area damage, you might struggle with single-target — that's when projectiles and focused attacks shine.
