Smash Beys Guide

What Is Smash Beys?

Smash Beys (also known as Smash Blades) is a Beyblade-style 2D fighting game developed by indie developer ItsProger, built with the Godot game engine. It was created as a submission to The Very Serious Juniper Dev Game Jam and is available for free on itch.io.

In Smash Beys, you battle with spinning tops (beys) in arenas. The game features a pixel-art visual style that players have described as reminiscent of old-school fighting games like Mortal Kombat, combined with the thrill of Beyblade-style top-to-top combat. The game emphasizes "juice" — impactful visual effects, satisfying knockbacks, and responsive physics that make every clash feel weighty.

The game was first published in late June 2026 and is still in active development. It runs entirely in the browser as an HTML5 WebGL game.

Game Modes

Smash Beys offers two distinct ways to play:

Creative Mode

Creative Mode is a relaxed, free-play mode where everything is unlocked from the start. You can:

  • Choose from all available beyblades and launchers without restrictions
  • Battle AI opponents purely for fun
  • Experiment with different combinations and strategies
  • Watch battles play out without worrying about progression

This mode is perfect for testing out new setups, learning the controls, or just enjoying chaotic top battles without pressure.

Progression Mode (Survival Mode)

Progression Mode (also called Survival Mode) adds a layer of challenge and reward:

  • Start with a basic beyblade and launcher
  • Earn rewards by defeating AI opponents
  • Slowly unlock new beyblades and launchers as you progress
  • Face increasingly difficult opponents as you climb the ranks
  • Your progress is saved between sessions

The developer has designed all beyblades to be relatively balanced in power, so skill and strategy matter more than which top you've unlocked. Progression Mode is about unlocking variety and customization, not overpowered gear.

Save System

Your game data is saved automatically between modes. You can switch freely between Creative and Progression Mode — all your unlocked items and progress carry over safely.

Controls

Aim your launchClick and drag to set direction and power
Launch your beyRelease mouse button
Boost spin speedTap/click while bey is in the arena
Move your beyArrow keys or WASD

The controls are intuitive and easy to pick up. The aiming system works like a slingshot — drag back to charge power and set the angle, then release to fire your bey into the arena.

Gameplay Mechanics

Launch Phase

Each battle begins with the launch phase. You control the angle and power of your bey's launch by clicking and dragging. The trajectory and initial speed of your bey depend entirely on how you aim. A well-placed launch can give you an early advantage by knocking the opponent's bey off-balance right from the start.

Spin Speed

Spin speed is your bey's most important stat. A faster-spinning top is harder to knock over and deals more damage on impact. You can tap to give your bey a spin boost, but use this strategically — boosting at the wrong time can leave you vulnerable. Spin speed naturally decays over time, so managing your boosts is key to outlasting your opponent.

Movement

Once launched, you control your bey's movement around the arena using the Arrow Keys or WASD. Movement allows you to:

  • Circle around your opponent to find weak angles
  • Dodge incoming attacks
  • Position yourself for a powerful strike
  • Chase down a fleeing opponent

Combat Physics

The game uses a physics system where:

  • Beys collide and bounce off each other based on their speed and angle of impact
  • A bey can be knocked out of the arena (ring-out) if it's pushed to the edge
  • A bey can be knocked over (stop spinning) if it takes enough hits from the right angles
  • The last bey spinning wins the round

Visual Feedback ("Juice")

One of the most praised aspects of Smash Beys is its "game juice" — the visual and audio feedback that makes combat feel satisfying:

  • Screen shake on heavy impacts
  • Particle effects on collisions
  • Speed lines and motion trails
  • Satisfying sound effects for every hit
  • Knockback animations that convey the force of each collision

Beyblades and Customization

Smash Beys features a variety of beyblades, each with its own visual design. While the developer has stated that all beys are balanced to be roughly the same power level, they differ in:

  • Visual design — Each bey has a unique look and color scheme
  • Weight distribution — Some beys may feel heavier or lighter, affecting knockback resistance
  • Spin characteristics — Different beys may spin differently based on their shape

In Progression Mode, you unlock:

  • New beyblades with different designs
  • New launchers that may affect your launch mechanics

The customization system is designed to reward experimentation. Try different bey and launcher combinations to find what feels best for your playstyle.

Tips and Tricks

Master Your Launch

The launch is the most important moment of any battle. Practice aiming at different angles:

  • Low, fast launches work well for quick strikes to knock opponents off-balance
  • High, arcing launches can put you above the opponent for a crushing downward blow
  • Straight-on launches are predictable but powerful

Manage Spin Speed Aggressively

  • Boost early to establish dominance in the first clash
  • Save boosts if you're already winning exchanges — you'll need the spin later
  • Boost when close to your opponent to maximize the impact of collisions
  • Don't boost at the edge of the arena — you might launch yourself out

Positioning Is Everything

  • Stay away from the edges unless you're trying to trap your opponent
  • Circle your opponent to find their weak side
  • Attack from angles, not head-on — glancing blows are less effective
  • Use the walls to your advantage by bouncing off them for unexpected angles

Read Your Opponent

  • Watch how the AI reacts to your movement
  • AI opponents have patterns — learn them to predict their next move
  • Bait the AI into boosting at the wrong time, then strike while their spin is low

Progression Mode Strategy

  • Start in Creative Mode to learn the controls and find your favorite bey before tackling Progression Mode
  • Focus on unlocking all beys first, then experiment with launchers
  • Switch between modes freely — practice in Creative, then test your skills in Progression

General Tips

  • The game is designed to be "just throw it in and watch" — sometimes the best strategy is to launch well and let physics do the work
  • Don't spam boost — time your boosts for when they'll have the most impact
  • Remember that all beys are balanced — if you're losing, focus on your strategy, not your equipment
  • The game saves your progress automatically, so feel free to experiment

Audio Settings

Smash Beys includes separate volume sliders for:

  • SFX (sound effects) — hits, launches, impacts, and UI sounds
  • Music — background battle music

You can adjust these independently to suit your preference.
