What Is SHADE Protocol?

SHADE Protocol is a 2D cyber-fantasy metroidvania from solo developer Little Legendary that revolves around a core twist: you can swap between two forms — DAWN and SHADE — each with its own abilities, weapons, and traversal options. The game blends music, code, and combat into a world on the brink of annihilation.

The story follows a protagonist caught between light and dark, fighting against the mysterious SHADE Protocol that threatens to overwrite reality itself. In this world, Instruments are weapons, music is magic, and code is the language of creation and destruction.

The game was showcased at the Secret Sauce Showcase 2026 and has a live Kickstarter campaign. Its Steam page lists it with Windows and Linux support.

How to Play SHADE Protocol

SHADE Protocol is a metroidvania at heart — you explore a large interconnected world, unlock new abilities, and return to earlier areas with fresh tools. The dual-form system adds a unique layer to this formula.

Core Loop:

  1. Explore a sprawling cyber-fantasy world split between digital realms and physical domains
  2. Swap between DAWN and SHADE forms to solve puzzles and overcome obstacles
  3. Fight enemies using Instruments — weapons that double as musical tools
  4. Upgrade your forms with new abilities and enhanced stats
  5. Uncover the story of the SHADE Protocol and the world it threatens to erase

The Dual-Form System:

This is the heart of SHADE Protocol. You have two forms that you can swap between at any time (even mid-combo):

DAWN Form — The light-aligned form focused on precision and ranged combat. DAWN wields Instruments that fire projectiles, create shields, and heal. Its traversal abilities include a short-range teleport dash and the ability to walk on specific light-based platforms. DAWN excels at controlling space and fighting from a distance.

SHADE Form — The dark-aligned form focused on raw power and close-quarters destruction. SHADE wields heavy Instruments for melee attacks, can phase through certain obstacles, and gains damage resistance. Its traversal includes a grappling hook and the ability to glide. SHADE is for getting in the enemy's face and staying there.

Swapping forms at the right moment is key. You might start a fight in SHADE to close distance, then swap to DAWN to finish with ranged attacks. Some enemies are vulnerable to only one form. Puzzles often require using both forms in sequence.

Instruments and Combat:

Instruments are your weapons, and each one behaves differently. The Lute fires harmonic projectiles that track enemies. The Drum creates shockwaves. The Flute summons familiar spirits. The Electric Guitar unleashes devastating close-range riffs. Each Instrument has a light attack, heavy attack, and special ability tied to your current form.

Combat is fast and combo-driven. You can string together attacks from both forms, swapping mid-combo for extended chains. Mastering the rhythm of form-swapping unlocks your full damage potential.

Exploration and Ability Gating:

Like any metroidvania, SHADE Protocol gates areas behind ability checks. The twist is that many gates require a specific form:

  • Light barriers require DAWN form to pass
  • Shadow gates require SHADE form to phase through
  • Some doors need both forms activated simultaneously (solve a puzzle as DAWN, then swap to SHADE to pass)
  • Code gates require you to "play" a sequence on your Instrument — a musical puzzle that opens the path

Upgrade System:

You upgrade each form separately. Finding upgrade nodes in the world lets you enhance:

  • DAWN — range, projectile speed, shield strength, healing efficiency
  • SHADE — melee damage, attack speed, damage resistance, grapple range
  • Both — health, stamina, movement speed, form-swap speed

Upgrade nodes are hidden throughout the world. Some are in plain sight but require a specific ability to reach. Others are behind optional bosses.

Tips and Tricks

Master Form-Swapping Early. The first area teaches you the basic swap, but the real skill is swapping mid-combo. Practice in the training room (find it early in the hub area) until swapping feels automatic.

Learn Enemy Vulnerabilities. Regular enemies usually favor one form. Blue-glowing enemies take more damage from DAWN. Red-glowing ones fear SHADE. Bosses cycle between vulnerabilities — watch their color shifts and swap accordingly.

Use DAWN for Exploration, SHADE for Combat. DAWN's teleport dash is better for platforming and reaching hidden areas. SHADE's combat power makes it better for clearing rooms. Swap to DAWN when exploring new territory, then switch to SHADE when enemies appear.

The Grappling Hook Changes Everything. Getting SHADE's grappling hook should be a priority. It opens traversal options that make the world feel twice as large. Many seemingly inaccessible areas become reachable with the hook.

Listen to the Music. Sound cues matter. A rising pitch means a secret is near. A discordant note signals an ambush. The game's soundtrack changes subtly based on your proximity to secrets and dangers.

Invest in Form-Swap Speed First. The upgrade that reduces swap cooldown is the single best investment. It lets you chain forms faster, which means more damage and better survivability.

Dont Ignore Code Puzzles. Theyre not optional. Code gates block major progression paths. Learn the basic note sequences early. The puzzles get more complex but follow consistent rules.

Explore with Both Forms. Some secrets are only visible in DAWN form (they glow with light essence). Others only appear in SHADE form (they exist in shadow). If youve cleared an area with one form, come back with the other.

Save Before Bosses. The game has save points, but theyre not always right before bosses. Carry a portable save item (craftable from common materials) and use it before entering boss rooms.
