What Is Puffer Panic?

Puffer Panic is a 3D underwater survival game by solo developer 74bit, playable free in your browser on itch.io. You control a pufferfish with a unique hold-and-release combat mechanic — gulp up debris and enemies, then blast them away in a spiky shockwave. Hold too long and you over-puff, scattering your ammo everywhere.

The game is structured across three increasingly hostile ocean zones: sunlit Tide Pools, electric Zappy Reefs, and the nightmare-inducing Deep Trench. Each zone has 4-5 waves of enemies followed by a boss fight. Between waves, you choose from 10 upgrade options that stack for powerful builds.

How to Play Puffer Panic

The core loop is simple: survive wave after wave of crabs, rushers, tanks, and splitters by timing your puffs. You don't shoot — you inhale, then explode.

Hold to gulp. Press and hold the left mouse button to suck in nearby debris and enemies. The longer you hold, the more you accumulate. Watch your pufferfish inflate — that's your ammo gauge.

Release to blast. Let go and everything you've swallowed fires out in a 360-degree spiky shockwave. The more you've consumed, the bigger and deadlier the blast.

Don't over-puff. There's a sweet spot. Hold too long and you burst, scattering your payload harmlessly and leaving yourself vulnerable. The game literally punishes greed.

Between waves, choose upgrades. Bigger gulps, faster swells, chain explosions, lifesteal, and more. Each upgrade stacks, so you can build toward specific playstyles — tanky puffer, speed puffer, explosive puffer.

Kill streaks matter. Build a multiplier by chaining kills quickly. The multiplier boosts your score and increases the rate at which you earn upgrade points.

Controls

  • Movement: Mouse — aim where you want to swim
  • Gulp / Inhale: Hold left mouse button
  • Blast / Release: Release left mouse button
  • Pause: Escape key

That's it. The entire game is built around mastering that one hold-release rhythm across different enemy types and zone mechanics.

Tips and Tricks

Learn the enemy types. Crabs are slow but armored — they take more hits. Rushers charge straight at you — time your gulp as they approach. Tanks are huge and explode on death, damaging anything nearby including you. Splitters divide into smaller versions when hit — kill them one at a time.

Prioritize chain upgrades early. The chain explosion upgrade turns each kill into a mini-blast that damages nearby enemies. In early waves when enemies are weaker, this clears rooms fast and builds your kill streak.

Don't camp in one spot. Enemies spawn from multiple directions. Keep moving to avoid being surrounded. The Deep Trench zone is especially punishing if you stay still.

Lifesteal is a trap in the early game. It sounds good, but the health return is small relative to the damage you take. Pick survivability upgrades (bigger gulps, damage reduction) first, then add lifesteal once you can survive long enough to benefit from it.

The boss fights test everything. Each zone ends with a boss that has unique attack patterns. The Tide Pool boss tests your basic timing. The Zappy Reef boss adds environmental hazards. The Deep Trench boss requires you to manage multiple threats simultaneously.

FAQ

Is Puffer Panic free? Yes, completely free. Play it directly in your browser on itch.io with no download required.

How long is the game? About 30-45 minutes for a full playthrough of all three zones. Replayability comes from trying different upgrade builds.

Can I save my progress? The game saves between zones. If you close the browser, you'll need to start from the beginning of your current zone.

Are there difficulty options? Not explicitly, but your upgrade choices effectively set the difficulty. Aggressive builds clear faster but are riskier.

Will there be more content? The developer has hinted at additional zones and enemy types in future updates.
