Play on SteamWhat Is Marque & Reprisal?
Marque & Reprisal is a roguelike sandbox historical sailing simulator from Iron Pagoda, releasing November 18, 2026 for Windows. You are a sea captain in the year 1522, the year Magellan's expedition completed its circumnavigation, and the game hands you the entire Earth to profit from or die in.
The map is the headline number: 655,362 tiles covering the whole planet, with 328 cities and villages, accurate geography, navigable rivers and lakes, mountains, ancient and natural wonders, and a detailed weather simulation on top. This is not a stylized ocean with ports sprinkled on it. The store description treats the world itself as the game's first feature.
Everything else orbits one verb at a time. Explore. Trade. Fish. Whale. Colonize. Fight. Pillage. Survive. Each is a full system, and death ends the captain permanently. When your captain dies, from hunger, thirst, storms, or pirates, you start a new voyage with a new captain. No going back.

How to Play Marque & Reprisal
The Trade Game
Every city buys and sells goods at different prices, and supply and demand react dynamically to your actions and to hundreds of NPC ships working the same routes. Three consequences follow:
- Prices move when you move. Dumping a cargo hold into one market crashes the price there. Spread sales across nearby ports.
- NPC traders are competition. A route that prints money this month attracts AI ships next month. Watch for route decay and rotate.
- Specie flows. The description mentions specie (coin) reacting to the economy, so cash itself has geography. Poor regions pay differently than rich ones.
Early captains should run short, safe hops between two or three known cities before attempting long ocean crossings. The weather simulation punishes ambitious routes that a short hop would survive.
Fishing and Whaling
Fishing is the starter economy. Buy nets, upgrade the ship, catch, and sell into the best market. The store page frames it plainly: upgrade your ship and your net to catch more fish.
Whaling is the high-risk version. Multiple whale species roam the map with ecologically accurate ranges and behaviors, whales breed, and calves follow mothers through the ocean. A harpoon kill yields valuable blubber. Two notes matter. Whale populations are finite regional resources, and a calf near your target is both an ethical and a mechanical warning: where there is a calf, there is a mother, and an angry one.
Colonization
Colonists seeking passage to the New World appear during voyages. Help them and you may found new cities together. Founded cities extend your trade network, which feeds back into the economy system. The practical loop: carry passengers, plant towns, then use your own ports as safe sale outlets when NPC market prices turn hostile.
Naval Combat and Port Assaults
Combat splits into ship-to-ship and city sieges. Against pirates or hostile nations, ship choice decides the fight before it starts. The other path is open: become the pirate, hunt merchant ships, and accept the enemies that come with it.
Port assault is the endgame escalation. With a large enough warship you bombard a hostile city to silence its shore batteries, then land marines to capture the port. The landing resolves as auto-battler combat between your crew and the garrison. Prepare accordingly: a bombardment that leaves the garrison intact turns your landing party into a funeral.
Surviving the Roguelike Layer
Death is permanent and comes from everywhere. Hunger, thirst, storms, pirates. Practical survival rules:
- Water and food are cargo. Long voyages fail on provisions, not combat. Buy for the route plus a storm's delay.
- Weather is a system, not scenery. The simulation is detailed enough that the store lists it as a feature. Route around storm seasons the way you would route around hostile waters.
- Upgrade before you escalate. Ship upgrades are the gap between surviving a pirate encounter and feeding one. The store's own advice ordering, explore then trade then fish then fight, is a difficulty curve in disguise.
- A dead captain is a lesson, not a loss. New voyages start with new captains. Knowledge of routes, prices, and whale grounds carries over where the captain does not.
Tips and Tricks
Start as a trader, not a raider. Trade income is steady; combat income requires a warship you cannot yet afford.
Follow the fish. Fishing needs no capital beyond nets and pays for your first upgrades.
Chart as you go. The world map is huge. Every discovered port is a future emergency stop.
Say yes to colonists. Free cities are the only long-term infrastructure a permadeath captain can build.
Wait on whaling. Learn the ship first. A harpoon chase in an under-optimized hull wastes the ocean's most valuable cargo.
FAQ
When does Marque & Reprisal release? November 18, 2026 on Steam.
Is the whole Earth really in the game? Yes, as a 655,362-tile map with 328 cities, navigable rivers and lakes, mountains, and a weather simulation. The store description is unusually specific about the numbers.
How punishing is permadeath? Captain death ends that voyage. You begin again with a new captain. There is no resurrection mechanic mentioned on the store page.
Is combat manual or automatic? Ship combat plays directly. Port captures resolve the marine landing as auto-battler combat between your crew and the garrison.
Can I play as a pirate? Yes. The store page explicitly offers both paths: fight pirates or become one and hunt merchant shipping.
Do whales repopulate? Whales breed and calves appear in the game, and species have ecologically accurate ranges. Overhunting a ground is a real risk the mechanics support.
What platforms and controllers? Windows, with full controller support, Steam Input API, keyboard-only and mouse-only modes, camera comfort options, and color alternatives.
