What Is The Wyndfinder?

The Wyndfinder is a party-based CRPG developed by Cat Lord Games, coming soon to Steam. Inspired by the hand-drawn fantasy animation of the 1980s, it combines grid-based tactical combat with deep role-playing mechanics. You create a Wyndfinder — a unique hero — and assemble a party of up to nine distinct characters, each with their own backstory, abilities, and motivations.

The game is built around a central mystery: a strange summons draws your party into a world of ancient magic, forgotten kingdoms, and moral choices that shape the narrative. Combat is turn-based on a grid, rewarding careful positioning and party synergy over brute force.

How to Play The Wyndfinder

Creating your Wyndfinder. Your Wyndfinder is the leader of your party. You customize their class, stats, and appearance at the start. The class you choose determines your combat role — frontline fighter, spellcaster, or support — and influences dialogue options throughout the game.

Building your party. You'll encounter potential companions as you explore. Each has unique skills and personal quests. The party cap is nine characters, but you can only bring four into combat at a time. Swap members between fights to adapt to different challenges.

Grid-based combat. Battles take place on a tactical grid. Each character has a movement range and action points per turn. Positioning matters: flanking enemies gives accuracy bonuses, high ground adds damage, and chokepoints let you control the flow of battle.

Exploration. The world is divided into hand-crafted regions. You move your party across an overworld map, discovering dungeons, towns, and hidden areas. Dialogue with NPCs can reveal quests, lore, and optional encounters.

Party Composition Tips

Balance roles. A good party needs a frontline tank, a damage dealer, a healer, and a flexible utility character. If your Wyndfinder is a spellcaster, recruit a fighter early. If you're a warrior, seek out a mage companion.

Synergy matters. Some characters have abilities that combo with others. For example, a character who can root enemies in place pairs well with area-of-effect spells. Experiment with different combinations.

Cover your weaknesses. Pay attention to the enemy types in each region. If you're facing heavily armored foes, bring characters with armor-piercing attacks. Against swarms, area damage is essential.

Exploration and Questing

Talk to everyone. NPCs in towns and camps offer side quests, lore, and sometimes hidden rewards. Some companions are only recruitable after completing specific side quests.

Check your surroundings. The hand-drawn world is full of visual storytelling. Cracked walls might hide secret passages. Unusual flora might indicate a hidden item. Take your time exploring each area.

Save often. The CRPG genre is unforgiving. The game likely includes auto-save at key points, but manual saves before difficult encounters are recommended.
