Hellsino Pokerlike Guide — Tips, Mechanics, and How to Win

Overview

Hellsino Pokerlike is a roguelike deckbuilder from solo developer Hula Hunt that fuses classic poker hands with tactical grid positioning. Forget everything you know about traditional poker games — here, where you place cards on a 5×3 board is as important as what you draw.

Inspired by the deckbuilding revolution that Balatro started, Hellsino Pokerlike adds a spatial dimension: cards form hands both horizontally and vertically simultaneously, triggering the devastating Nexus Multiplier when aligned perfectly. Every run is a desperate gamble in a twisted underworld casino where you fight the devilish dealer for your eternal soul.

The game launched a free demo on Steam on June 4, 2026, with the full release coming soon. It currently has zero reviews and no existing guides, making this the definitive early-access strategy resource.

Getting Started

The Setup

Each run begins with a full standard 52-card deck plus 2 Jokers — 54 cards total. Your goal is to survive four Acts by outscoring the dealer in head-to-head card combat.

Key resources:

  • Health = Your Deck. Every card in your deck is a life point. When the dealer attacks, they shred cards from your deck.
  • Soul Chips. The currency earned from surviving Acts, spent at the Intermission Shop between rounds.
  • Shields. Protect your high-value cards from being shredded.

The Board

You play on a 5×3 grid. Each turn, you draw cards from your remaining deck and place them onto empty grid cells. The position of each card determines what hands you form.

Core Mechanics

1. Grid Combat System

The 5×3 board is evaluated after every card placement:

Horizontal hands: Each row of 3 cards is evaluated as a 3-card poker hand. Vertical hands: Each column of 3 cards is also evaluated as a 3-card poker hand.

A single card can contribute to both a horizontal AND a vertical hand simultaneously — this is the key strategic layer.

Hand rankings (3-card poker):

HandCompositionBase Damage
High CardNo matching ranks1x
PairTwo of the same rank2x
FlushThree of the same suit3x
StraightThree consecutive ranks4x
Three of a KindThree of the same rank6x
Straight FlushConsecutive + same suit8x

Face card values: Jack = 11, Queen = 12, King = 13. Aces can be high (14) or low (1).

2. The Nexus Multiplier

This is the most important mechanic to understand. When a card placement completes both a horizontal hand AND a vertical hand simultaneously, you trigger the Nexus Multiplier.

  • A Nexus trigger doubles the damage of both hands
  • Stacking Nexus triggers across multiple placements creates exponential damage chains
  • Priority placement: Always look for spots where a single card completes two hands at once

Example: If placing a single card completes a Flush horizontally AND a Pair vertically, both hands get the Nexus bonus. That's a 3x + 2x = 5x base damage, doubled to 10x.

3. Deck-as-Health System

Your deck is your lifeline:

  • You start with 54 cards (full deck)
  • Each time you take damage, the dealer shreds cards from the top of your deck
  • When your deck hits 0, you lose the run
  • Shielded cards cannot be shredded

Strategic implication: Every card you play is both an offensive resource AND a defensive one. Spending too many cards aggressively leaves you vulnerable to the next attack.

4. Perks and Cheat Cards

The Intermission Shop offers over 45 Perks and Cheat Cards. These are game-changing upgrades that break the standard rules:

PerkEffect
Force FlushGuarantees all drawn cards share a suit for 3 turns
Mirror InkDuplicates the last card placed
Heavy ShieldProtects 3 random cards from next attack
Loop MasterStraights now wrap from King→Ace→2
Fold BombClears the entire board, returns cards to hand, destroys 1 random enemy card

Buying priority: Nexus-enabling Perks > Shield upgrades > Damage boosts > Utility cards

Advanced Strategies

Opening Strategy (Act 1)

  1. Focus on the center column. The center column connects to three rows (top, middle, bottom). A strong center placement creates the most Nexus opportunities.
  2. Avoid playing all cards. Leave 2-3 cards in hand for defense. The dealer attacks after your turn ends.
  3. Prioritize Pairs over High Cards. Even a 2x Pair in a single row is better than spreading High Cards everywhere.
  4. Save Soul Chips for Act 2 shop. Don't buy everything in Act 1 — the best Perks appear in later shops.

Mid-Run Strategy (Acts 2-3)

  1. Build around a single Perk. If you picked Force Flush, reorganize your play to maximize Flush hands. If you picked Mirror Ink, place your best card first, then duplicate it.
  2. Watch the dealer's pattern. Each Act boss has a predictable attack pattern. The Devilish Dealer alternates between heavy single-target shreds and wide-area attacks. Shield appropriately.
  3. Use the Fold Bomb carefully. It clears the board completely — great for salvaging a bad round, but it destroys one random card from your deck permanently.

Endgame (Act 4 and Beyond)

  1. Go all-in on Nexus combos. By Act 4, raw damage from single hands won't cut it. You need exponential Nexus stacks.
  2. Loop Hands are your friend. The Loop Master Perk keeps straights alive by wrapping from King to Ace to Two. This opens up dramatically more hand combinations on the grid.
  3. Final Stand trigger. When you're nearly bankrupt (under 10 cards), the Final Stand passive kicks in — all damage is boosted proportionally to shields lost. This is a last-resort win condition.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Over-extending on card placement. Playing 9+ cards per turn leaves you with zero defense. Aim for 5-6 strategic placements per round.
  • Ignoring vertical hands. Most new players only look at rows. The real power comes from column combinations.
  • Hoarding Soul Chips. Unspent chips are worthless if you lose the next Act. Buy meaningful upgrades before each boss fight.
  • Neglecting shields. Pure offense without shields means one bad dealer turn ends your run.

Controls and Interface

  • Mouse: Click and drag cards from hand to board
  • Right-click: Return card from board to hand (before placement is confirmed)
  • Spacebar: Confirm all placements and end turn
  • Tab: View the current deck composition and remaining card count
  • Hover any card: See its rank, suit, and what hands it currently contributes to
