Helixxed Guide — How to Play, Tips and Tricks

What Is Helixxed?

Helixxed is a free roguelike brick-breaker created by Kaplin86 for the Godot Wild Jam #94. Made in just 7 days, the game puts a creative spin on the classic Breakout formula: you control a scientist working for "Big Science" whose job is to mutate a ball creature into the ultimate organism. How do you measure mutation progress? By breaking bricks, apparently.

Each run loops through two phases: brick-breaking stages where you bounce your ball to clear the screen, and gene-purchasing intermissions where you spend earned currency on mutations that add special effects to your ball. The roguelike structure means each run feels different as you experiment with different genetic upgrade combinations.

The game runs directly in your browser on itch.io — no download required.

How to Play Helixxed

Core Loop

  1. Break the bricks. Use your paddle to bounce the ball and destroy every brick on the screen. Bricks come in different colors and may require multiple hits.

  2. Collect resources. Destroyed bricks drop currency and occasionally power-ups. Move your paddle to catch them.

  3. Visit the gene shop. Between levels, spend your collected resources on genetic mutations. Each mutation adds a passive or active effect to your ball — faster speed, splitting into multiple balls, explosive impacts, piercing shots, etc.

  4. Repeat. Each new level introduces tougher brick layouts. Survive as long as you can while building an increasingly mutated ball.

Genes and Mutations

The gene-purchasing system is the heart of Helixxed. Mutations stack across your run, so the ball you finish with may be completely different from the one you started with. Some example effects:

  • Speed genes make your ball travel faster
  • Split genes cause your ball to divide into multiple projectiles
  • Explosive genes create area-of-effect damage when your ball hits bricks
  • Piercing genes let your ball pass through bricks without bouncing off

Experiment with different combinations to find synergies. A fast, splitting, explosive ball clears screens in seconds but is harder to control.

Move paddle leftA
Move paddle rightD
Launch ball / shootMouse click

The controls are intentionally simple — the depth comes from mutation strategy, not mechanical execution.

Tips and Tricks

Surviving Longer

  • Prioritize paddle reach. Early mutations that make your paddle wider or give you a safety net (extra lives) keep you alive longer to build stronger combos.
  • Don't ignore slow bricks. Some brick types take multiple hits. Plan your angles to chip away at them efficiently rather than waiting for lucky bounces.
  • Watch the ball, not the bricks. Your eyes should track the ball's trajectory. The paddle positioning matters more than which brick breaks next.

Mutation Strategy

  • Synergy beats quantity. Two mutations that complement each other (e.g., splitting + piercing) outperform four random ones that work in isolation.
  • Speed is a double-edged sword. Faster balls clear screens faster but become harder to react to. Build speed only after you have control-oriented mutations (like wider paddle or slow-down effects).
  • Save currency for high-impact genes. Skip cheap, low-impact mutations early on. Saving for a game-changing gene at the next shop can carry you further than incremental upgrades.

Brick-Breaking Fundamentals

  • Aim for the corners. Balls that hit corner bricks tend to bounce at unpredictable angles, clearing more of the screen.
  • Keep the ball moving horizontally. Vertical bounces waste time and increase the risk of missing the paddle on the return.
  • Use walls. Bouncing the ball off side walls at sharp angles creates chaotic patterns that cover more screen area.

FAQ

Is Helixxed free?

Yes. It is completely free and playable in your browser on itch.io.

How long is a typical run?

A successful run lasts 5-15 minutes depending on your mutation choices and how far you progress through the levels. Since it is a roguelike, runs end when you lose all your balls.

Can I save my progress?

No. Helixxed is a roguelike — each run is independent and progress resets when you lose. The game was built for a 7-day game jam and does not include persistent save features.

What engine was it made with?

Godot Engine, as part of the Godot Wild Jam #94.

Is there a mobile version?

The game is designed for browser play with keyboard and mouse. It may not work well on touchscreens without keyboard input.

Are there multiple endings?

No. The goal is simply to survive as long as possible while building the most absurdly mutated ball creature.
