What Is Grave Seasons?

Grave Seasons is a genre-blending indie game developed by Perfect Garbage that combines cozy farming simulation with supernatural mystery. Set in a picturesque rural town, you play as a newcomer who inherits a family farm. By day, you plant crops, raise animals, befriend townsfolk, and build a life. By night — and increasingly during the day — you realize something is very wrong. Someone in this charming town is a supernatural serial killer, and the bodies are piling up.

What makes Grave Seasons unique is how it balances two tones. The farming and relationship mechanics are genuine — you can spend hours optimizing your crop layouts, decorating your farmhouse, and romancing eligible townsfolk. But the investigation system lurks beneath the surface. Every friendly conversation might hide a clue. Every locked door might conceal a secret. The game doesn't force you to investigate — you can focus purely on farming if you choose — but the mystery unfolds around you regardless.

How to Play Grave Seasons

Farming: Plant and harvest crops across the seasons. Each season has unique crops that grow best in that weather. Start with basic vegetables (carrots, potatoes, tomatoes) and unlock rare magical plants as you progress. Upgrade your tools at the blacksmith. Build sprinklers, scarecrows, and fertilizer processors to optimize your yield.

Relationship building: The town has 20+ characters, each with unique schedules, preferences, and secrets. Give them gifts they like, engage in their favorite activities, and attend town festivals to build friendship. Several characters are romanceable — but be careful: one of them might be the killer.

Investigation: As you explore the town and surrounding areas, you'll find clues — strange symbols, hidden notes, locked rooms, suspicious behaviors. Your journal tracks these discoveries. Piece together the evidence to identify the killer before they strike again. The investigation is non-linear; clues can be found in any order, and multiple paths lead to the truth.

Day/Night cycle: Days are for farming and socializing. Nights grow increasingly dangerous as the killer becomes bolder. Being outside after dark puts you at risk, but some clues only appear at night. Balance safety with discovery.

Tips and Tricks

Prioritize the farm early. Your farm is your primary income source in the first season. Focus on high-return crops like potatoes and strawberries. Save the investigation for rainy days and evenings when you can't do farm work anyway.

Talk to everyone every day. NPC schedules change depending on the day of the week and the game's story progression. Daily conversations reveal clues you might otherwise miss. More importantly, a character who suddenly changes their routine might be hiding something.

Gift strategically. Each character has loved, liked, neutral, and hated gifts. Give loved gifts on birthdays for maximum relationship gain. Once you reach higher friendship levels, characters share personal stories that often contain crucial investigation clues.

Upgrade your tools before expanding. A copper hoe is more valuable than an extra 10 plots. Tool upgrades save time and energy, letting you do more in a day. Visit the blacksmith as soon as you have the materials.

Don't trust anyone completely. Everyone in Grave Seasons has secrets. The friendliest character might be the most dangerous. Pay attention to inconsistencies in what people tell you versus what you discover.

Save often. The killer can strike at unexpected moments. Manual saves let you rewind if things go badly. The game autosaves at the start of each day, but manual saves give you more control.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When does Grave Seasons release?
A: Grave Seasons is coming to Steam in 2026. An exact release date has not been announced yet.

Q: Is it more farming sim or horror game?
A: It's roughly 60% farming/life sim and 40% mystery/investigation. The horror elements are present but not overwhelming — think Stardew Valley meets a murder mystery.

Q: Can I avoid the horror and just farm?
A: You can largely ignore the investigation and focus on farming. The story progresses around you, but you won't be forced into confrontations. However, the atmosphere grows darker as time passes regardless.

Q: How many romance options are there?
A: The developers have confirmed 20+ characters with deep stories. Multiple characters are romanceable across different genders and species (in true fantasy fashion).

Q: Is there replay value?
A: Yes. Different choices, different romance paths, and the non-linear investigation mean multiple playthroughs reveal different aspects of the story. The killer can be different characters depending on your actions.
