Ghost Vanguard Strategy Guide — Combos, Builds & Dungeon Tactics

Overview

Ghost Vanguard is a dark fantasy beat-em-up with roguelike elements, developed by WOMBO COMBO GAMES INC. — a small studio based in Fukuoka, Japan, led by former SEGA developers. You play as a warrior resurrected by the gods, stripped of memory and power, descending into a dungeon shaped by forgotten dreams and divine secrets. The game blends the stylish combo-heavy action of Devil May Cry with the procedural dungeon crawling of modern roguelikes.

The combat is built around weapon-based combo trees, elemental synergies, and a ranking system that rewards flashy, uninterrupted strings. Between runs, you unlock permanent upgrades that expand your combat options. Each run randomizes weapons, spells, relics, and room layouts, ensuring no two descents play the same.

Ghost Vanguard won Best in Show and Best Action Roguelike at TooManyGames Indie Game Showcase. A demo is available on Steam. The full release is planned for 2026 on PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch.

Getting Started — Your First Run

What to Expect

Your first run starts with a basic one-handed sword and a limited moveset. You can do a basic combo string into a launcher, then follow up with an aerial combo. The game feels simple at first because permanent abilities like parry, double jump, and lunge are locked behind metaprogression.

The demo offers three weapon types (sword, greatsword, daggers) and a handful of spells. The full game will expand this significantly.

Beginner Mistakes

Treating it like a traditional beat-em-up. You cannot button-mash your way through Ghost Vanguard. Each enemy type has patterns you must learn. Blocking and dodging are not optional.

Ignoring the dodge mechanic. There is no dedicated dash button. You dodge by double-tapping forward. This takes time to learn. Practice in the first room until it becomes reflex.

Hoarding gold for the perfect relic. Spend gold at every shop. A relic that helps you through the next two rooms is worth more than one you save for a shop that might not appear.

Skipping mini-game rooms. Challenge rooms offer some of the best rewards in the game. They are worth the risk, especially early in a run when you have less to lose.

Committing to a build too early. Do not lock into a weapon or element type until you have found at least two items with matching tags. A Fire weapon alone is not a build.

Core Mechanics — Under the Hood

Combat Fundamentals

Ghost Vanguard's combat is built around mobility, combo chaining, and a style meter. The longer your combo string, the higher your rank, and the better your rewards.

InputActionNotes
Light Attack (J/X)Fast horizontal strikesChains into combos, builds style meter
Heavy Attack (K/Y)Slow, high-damage strikesStaggers enemies, launches airborne
Special (L/B)Equipped spell or abilityConsumes mana, cooldown-based
Dodge (double-tap forward)Invincibility framesEssential for survival, no dedicated dash button
Jump (W/Up)Vertical mobilityAvoids ground attacks, sets up air combos
Grab (forward + attack)Enemy grabSetup for big damage on staggered enemies

The Combo Flow

A standard combo follows this structure:

  1. Opening: Light attack chain (3-4 hits) to build stagger on the enemy.
  2. Launcher: Heavy attack or special that lifts the enemy into the air.
  3. Air combo: Follow up with light attacks while airborne. The aerial rave can be extended with spells.
  4. Aerial extension: Use a projectile or teleport spell to reset the aerial rave limit, allowing a second air combo.
  5. Finisher: Slam the enemy back to the ground or use a knockback special for area damage.

The style meter ranks from D to S. Reaching S rank in a fight increases loot quality. To maintain S rank, vary your attacks — do not repeat the same combo string twice in a row.

Weapon Types

Each weapon has unique speed, range, and combo trees.

WeaponSpeedRangeBest For
SwordMediumMediumBalanced, all-rounder
GreatswordSlowShort-high damageStagger locking, burst damage
DaggersFastVery shortAerial combos, hit-and-run
Spear (unlockable)MediumLongCrowd control, keeping distance
Axe (unlockable)SlowShortHigh stagger, breaking guards

Weapons are not just stat sticks — each changes your basic combo tree. A sword has a three-hit light chain into launcher. Daggers have a five-hit light chain but no natural launcher.

Elemental Synergy System

Every weapon, spell, and relic has elemental tags. Matching tags unlock bonus effects:

Element PairSynergy Effect
Fire + FireEnemies take burn damage over time
Ice + IceAttacks slow enemies, eventually freezing them solid
Lightning + LightningChain lightning between enemies on hit
Shadow + ShadowLifesteal on every hit
Light + LightBonus damage against armored enemies
Fire + IceExplosive shatter damage on frozen enemies
Lightning + WaterAoE shock on wet enemies

Aim for two items with the same element to activate the first-tier synergy. Three items unlocks the second-tier effect. Do not mix more than two elements in a single build — spread too thin means no synergy activates.

The Minigame Rooms

Between combat rooms, you encounter special challenge rooms:

  • Timing Challenge: Hit targets in sequence within a time limit. Rewards: temporary attack speed buff.
  • Survival Wave: Survive a set number of enemy waves without healing. Rewards: permanent HP upgrade.
  • Treasure Gambit: Choose between three chests. One is a mimic. Rewards: rare relic if you pick correctly.
  • Reflection Battle: Fight a copy of your character with equal stats. Rewards: unique weapon.

Always enter challenge rooms. The rewards are better than standard combat encounters, and there is no permadeath penalty for failure (you just get less rewards, not zero).

Progression Strategy

Metaprogression Unlock Order

PriorityUnlockEffect
1ParryOpens up defensive counterplay. Essential for boss fights.
2Double JumpUnlocks extended aerial combos and dodge options.
3Lunge AttackGap closer for ranged enemies.
4Starting Sword UpgradeYour first reliable weapon appears in the first room.
5Relic of PersistenceStart each run with a random relic. Gives early build direction.
6HP UpgradesMore room for error while learning boss patterns.

Gold Management

Gold carries between rooms but resets between runs. Spend it at shops:

  • Relics (150-300 gold): Permanent passive effects. Highest value purchase.
  • Spells (100-200 gold): Active abilities. Buy only if they match your element type.
  • Potions (50 gold): Healing. Buy if you are below 60% HP.
  • Weapons (200-400 gold): Buy only if the weapon type and element match your build direction.

Builds and Tier Lists

S-Tier: Elemental Burn (Fire)

SlotTarget Item
WeaponFire Sword or Fire Greatsword
Spell 1Flame Wave (AoE burn)
Spell 2Meteor Strike (single target)
RelicEmber Core (+50% burn damage)
RelicPhoenix Feather (revive on death)

Stack fire damage over time. Apply burn, kite enemies, watch them die while you focus on dodging. Best against groups.

A-Tier: Frost Control (Ice)

SlotTarget Item
WeaponIce Daggers (fast apply)
Spell 1Freeze Beam (ranged slow)
Spell 2Ice Shield (defensive)
RelicPermafrost Heart (freeze spreads to nearby enemies)

Focus on slowing and freezing enemies. Once frozen, heavies shatter them for bonus damage. Strong against fast enemies but weaker against bosses with freeze resistance.

Step-by-Step Strategy Sequences

Sequence 1: First Room Clear Optimization

  1. Enter the room. Assess enemy types: 3 grunts (melee), 1 archer (ranged).
  2. Open with a sprint toward the archer. The archer's arrow is telegraphed — slide under it with a forward dodge.
  3. Kill the archer with a light-light-heavy combo (3 hits, kills in one string).
  4. Turn to the grunts. They are grouped. Use your special ability (if AoE) to hit all three.
  5. Clean up survivors with light attacks. Keep the combo alive by switching targets — do not let the style meter drop.
  6. Search the room for breakable pots. They drop gold and health orbs.

Sequence 2: Handling a Shielded Enemy

Shielded enemies block frontal attacks. The solution:

  1. Wait for them to attack. Block or dodge the strike.
  2. During their recovery window, dash behind them.
  3. Back attacks bypass shields and deal bonus damage.
  4. Alternatively, use a spell that hits from above (Meteor Strike) or an ice spell to freeze them, then shatter.

Sequence 3: Building an S-Rank Combo

To reach and maintain S rank:

  1. Start with a light chain (4 hits) into launcher (heavy).
  2. Follow with aerial lights (3 hits). Do not repeat the exact same air string.
  3. Before landing, cast a spell to extend. A teleport spell resets your aerial limit.
  4. Continue the air combo with another light string.
  5. Finish with a slam (special while falling) or knockback.
  6. If the fight has more enemies, chain into the next target without letting the meter drop. Use a gap closer spell to reach them.

Sequence 4: Boss First Phase — Pattern Learning

  1. Phase 1 (100%-60% HP): The boss uses 3 moves. Observe the first 30 seconds without attacking. Identify the telegraph for each.
  2. Punish the safest move: the one with the longest recovery window.
  3. Do not get greedy. Hit 2-3 times, then back off.
  4. When the boss reaches 60% HP, expect a phase transition. Back away. The boss will roar and gain new moves.

Sequence 5: Boss Phase 2 — Execution

  1. The boss now has 2 new moves. One is a wide sweep, one is a charge attack.
  2. The sweep is safest to punish — dodge through it, then attack the boss's back.
  3. The charge is dangerous. Double-dodge sideways, not backward.
  4. When the boss is staggered (glowing yellow), unload your full combo: light chain → launcher → aerial rave → spell extension → finisher.
  5. If you have a Fire build, the burn DoT will do most of the work. Focus entirely on survival.

Advanced Tips

The Quick Rise Mechanic

The game lacks a quick rise option after being knocked down. Holding block while on the ground reduces recovery time by about 30%. Practice this — staying on the ground means eating follow-up attacks.

Perfect Parry Windows

Parry is unlocked through metaprogression. The parry window is 8 frames (at 60fps). Successful parries:

  • Stun the enemy for 2 seconds.
  • Refill 20% of your mana.
  • Build significant style meter.

Practice parry timing on grunts before attempting it on elites. A mistimed parry leaves you open for 1 second.

Elemental Proc Rate

Weapons have hidden elemental proc rates. Daggers proc elements more frequently per second than greatswords because they hit more times. For elemental builds, Daggers are mathematically superior to slow weapons. For stagger builds, Greatswords are better.

The Air Combo Limit Break

Most weapons allow 3 aerial hits before the enemy drops. You can extend this by:

  1. Using a teleport spell mid-air — this resets the aerial hit counter.
  2. Using a homing projectile that tracks the enemy in the air and keeps them suspended.
  3. Double Jump (unlocked) resets air options and allows a second launcher without landing.

A fully extended air combo can reach 10-12 hits before the enemy escapes.

Resource Priority Between Rooms

Do not mash the "next room" button. Before leaving a cleared room:

  1. Break all destructible objects. They drop hidden gold and health.
  2. Check for secret walls (look for cracks in the pixel art).
  3. Let your mana regenerate. Stand still for 10 seconds if needed.
  4. Check your build. Are you still on the right element path?

FAQ / Common Mistakes

Q: Why is my damage so low? A: You probably have mismatched elements. Check that your weapon, spells, and at least one relic share an element. A weapon with no matching element deals reduced damage.

Q: I keep dying in the second zone. What am I doing wrong? A: You are probably not spending gold at shops. Stockpile instills a false sense of safety. Spend gold on relics. A single defensive relic can double your effective HP.

Q: Is there a best weapon? A: Sword is the safest and most consistent. Daggers are better for elemental builds. Greatsword for stagger builds. Every weapon is viable if built around correctly.

Q: How do I unlock more weapons? A: Weapons are unlocked through metaprogression. Focus on unlocking Parry first — it opens more combat options than any single weapon.

Q: Should I play the demo or wait for full release? A: The demo gives you a feel for combat and progression. It includes the first zone and the first boss. Play it to learn mechanics. Progress does not carry to the full game, but the skills you learn do.

Q: Controller or keyboard? A: Controller is strongly recommended. The combo system requires precise timing and directional inputs that feel natural on a controller. Keyboard works but has a steeper learning curve for aerial combos.
