Echo Zero — Complete Co-op Roguelite Strategy Guide

What Is Echo Zero?

Echo Zero is a co-op roguelite where you descend into a procedurally generated sci-fi underworld as an expendable clone. You explore, gather resources, build and defend a base, and battle a rapidly mutating alien species called Organism K2. Every death transfers your mind to a new randomly generated clone — the hive gets closer to the surface each time you fail.

Developed by Wildboy Studios, Echo Zero blends exploration (think Deep Rock Galactic), base-building (Factorio-lite), and tower defense into a single package. The AI overseer JUNO watches your progress, dispensing upgrades and privileges while tightening her hold over your mission. You can play solo or with up to 3 other players in online co-op.

The game is currently in a pre-release state on Steam (Coming Soon). Price TBA.

Core Gameplay Loop

A typical Echo Zero run follows this cycle:

Descend → Explore → Gather → Build → Defend → Extract (or Die)

Descend: Each run starts at the DOME elevator. You pick your loadout and descend into a new procedurally generated sector.

Explore: The underground is a network of caves, tunnels, and hive chambers. Resources, loot, and threats are randomized. Violet Bloom zones mark high-risk, high-reward areas where Organism K2 is most active.

Gather: Collect scrap, organic matter, rare minerals, blueprints, and data caches. Everything feeds back into your base and upgrades.

Build: Your base's heart is the generator. Surround it with barricades, turrets, droid workshops, and support structures. Every build choice affects your survival during defense waves.

Defend: Enemy waves attack your base on a timer. The generator must survive. Randomized upgrade paths mean you can't rely on the same strategy every run.

Extract or Die: Complete objectives to earn extraction rights. Die and you respawn as a new clone, losing unbanked resources.

Getting Started — First Runs

Choose Your Loadout

Starting equipment is basic but functional:

SlotEquipmentPurpose
PrimaryScavenger RifleAll-round weapon, decent at all ranges
SecondaryMining LaserResource gathering, weak combat use
AbilityScouting DroneReveals nearby rooms and threat levels
UtilityRepair KitHeals structures and droids

First upgrade priority: Upgrade your Scouting Drone to Mark II (reveals resource nodes). Knowing where resources are → faster gathering → stronger base → survival.

First 10 Minutes

  1. Scout the perimeter of your starting room before building anything. Check all four exits. If one leads to a Violet Bloom zone, wall it off immediately.

  2. Place the generator in a central, defensible position. Avoid corners — enemies can attack from multiple angles if you're pinned.

  3. Build two barricades at the most exposed entrance. One layer isn't enough for the first wave.

  4. Scavenge everything within your safe zone before the first wave timer hits zero. Scrap is the universal resource — gather it obsessively.

  5. First wave arrives at the 5-minute mark. Don't panic. Basic enemies die to 2-3 rifle shots. Focus fire on the glowing ones (they're squad leaders).

Common First-Run Mistakes

  • Building too far from the generator. Turret range is limited. Everything must be within 2 rooms of the generator core.
  • Ignoring droid production. A single repair droid doubles your base survival time. Build the droid workshop as soon as you have 50 scrap.
  • Over-exploring before wave 1. You don't need every room cleared. You need a defensible base. Build first, explore between waves.
  • Saving ammo when it matters. Missed shots don't carry over between runs. Empty the magazine. Resources are replaceable — your generator isn't.

Base Building & Defense

Generator Room Layout

Your generator room should be built with sight lines and fallback positions. The default layout is a square room with four doorways.

Optimal generator room setup:

  • Generator in the center, surrounded by a reinforced wall (requires 30 scrap, adds 500 HP to generator)
  • Two auto-turrets on opposite corners, covering all four doorways
  • One repair droid station in the corner behind the generator
  • Ammo fabricator next to the repair station
  • Emergency bunker (upgrade) on the far wall — retreat here if the generator room is breached

Turret Types

TurretCostBest AgainstNotes
Auto-Turret25 scrapBasic swarm enemiesDefault choice. Reliable.
Laser Turret40 scrapMedium armored unitsHigher damage, slow fire rate. Place near chokepoints.
Flamethrower35 scrapOrganic hive creaturesShort range, massive area denial. Violet Bloom zones.
Rail Turret60 scrapElite enemies, bossesLong range, high damage, slow. One per base is enough.
EMP Turret50 scrapShielded enemiesDisables shields. Only useful against specific enemy types.

Droid Types

DroidCostFunction
Repair Droid50 scrapAutomatically repairs structures and generator
Combat Droid75 scrapFollows you, attacks enemies. Helpful in co-op.
Scavenger Droid40 scrapAutomatically collects nearby scrap and resources
Builder Droid60 scrapSpeeds up construction by 50% per droid assigned

Droid synergy: Combat Droid + Repair Droid = your personal support squad. The Combat Droid tanks enemies while the Repair Droid heals your shield. This combo lets you clear Violet Bloom zones safely.

Wargear & Mutations

Wargear are passive upgrades found in chests and data caches. They occupy limited slots (3 base, expandable to 6).

Mutations (Risk/Reward)

Mutations are powerful buffs with a downside. You can carry 1 base, expandable to 2.

Co-op Tips

  • Share resources via the communal bank (built next to generator). Players drop scrap into the bank and anyone can withdraw. Set a minimum balance of 50 scrap before spending.
  • Divide and conquer during defense waves. One player defends generator, one player clears exterior spawning points before enemies reach the base.
  • Revive priority: Repair Droid > Player > Turret. A dead player can be revived by any teammate within 15 seconds.
  • Co-op scaling: Enemy HP scales with player count. Two players = 1.5x enemy HP. Four players = 2.5x enemy HP. Bring more turrets per player.

Progression & Unlock System

Between Runs (Meta-Progression)

Resources earned during runs are banked and can be spent on permanent upgrades:

UpgradeCostEffect
Clone Quality I500 scrap+20% starting HP
Clone Quality II1,500 scrap+10% starting shield
Loadout Slots1,000 scrap+1 starting weapon slot
Droid Blueprints800 scrapUnlock new droid types in shop
Base Templates600 scrapStart with pre-built barricade layout
JUNO's Favor2,000 scrapStart with one random wargear equipped

Best first upgrade: Clone Quality I > Loadout Slots > Base Templates. Survivability lets you explore longer, which gathers more scrap for all other upgrades.
