Dreamsend: Wintersong — Deep Strategy Guide

Overview

Dreamsend: Wintersong is a 2.5D turn-based tactical RPG set in a cyberpunk fantasy world called Veichne — a land of eternal winter where magic meets neon-lit streets. Developed solo by Anthony Nguyen, the game blends grid-based tactical combat with ability systems inspired by MOBAs and classic strategy RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics.

You lead a group of mercenaries called the Doves, caught in a conspiracy that spans corporate towers, frozen wastelands, and ancient ruins. Combat is turn-based on hexagonal grids, but each character has a hotbar of abilities with cooldowns, area effects, and combo interactions — closer to a MOBA than a traditional tactics game.

The game is currently unreleased with a Steam page live for wishlisting. It was showcased at DreamHack Atlanta under the Indie Playground section. A release date has not been announced.

Core Gameplay Mechanics

Turn-Based Tactical Combat

Combat plays out on hexagonal grids. Each unit has a movement range, action points, and a set of abilities on cooldown timers. The MOBA influence shows in how abilities work — skill shots, area-of-effect circles, dash attacks, and ultimate abilities with long cooldowns.

Key combat rules:

  • Units act in initiative order (SPD stat determines turn sequence)
  • Each turn: move + one action, or move + use an ability
  • Abilities have cooldowns (2-6 turns) — no mana system
  • Flanking gives accuracy bonuses
  • Elevation matters — high ground grants damage boost
  • Cover reduces incoming damage by 30%

The Roster System

You recruit and manage a roster of characters, each with unique ability kits. Unlike games where you build one protagonist, Dreamsend expects you to swap team members between missions based on the enemy composition.

Roster mechanics:

  • 12+ recruitable characters spread across the story
  • Each has 4 standard abilities + 1 ultimate
  • Passive traits unlock at relationship milestones
  • Permadeath is optional (toggle in settings) — disabled by default

Progression — Abilities, Items, and Passives

Three parallel progression tracks:

Ability unlocks. Each character levels up individually. At level 3, 6, and 10 they unlock new abilities. You can swap abilities between missions but not mid-battle.

Item slots. Each character has weapon, armor, accessory, and relic slots. Items drop from enemies and are found in chests. Weapon types matter — swords do slash damage, maces do blunt, staves do magic. Enemies have resistances.

Passive tree. A shared pool of passive points earned through exploration and side quests. Passives apply globally — things like "+10% crit damage for all units" or "Scout reveals one extra tile on the map."

Characters — The Doves Mercenary Group

Based on the reveal trailer and Steam description, the core cast includes:

CharacterRoleWeaponPlaystyle
KaelVanguardGreatswordFrontline tank with charge abilities and taunt
MiraStrikerTwin daggersHigh mobility flanker, bonus damage from behind
OrinCasterStaffAoE magic damage, debuffs, zone control
SeraSupportRapierHeals, buffs, and a counter-attack stance
VexSpecialistRifleLong-range single-target damage, recon abilities
ThorneBruiserAxeSlow but devastating melee, self-heal on kill

Each character has a relationship meter with Kael (the de facto leader). Higher relationship unlocks dialogue options, side missions, and bonus passive slots. Relationship improves by fighting alongside each other and making story choices they agree with.

Battle System Deep Dive

Ability Types

  • Skill shots — line or cone attacks that require aiming. Damage falls off after 3 tiles.
  • AoE circles — place an area effect that activates after 1 turn delay. Enemies can walk out.
  • Dashes — movement abilities that also deal damage. Great for repositioning.
  • Traps — placeable hazards that trigger when enemies walk over them. Last 3 turns.
  • Ultimates — powerful abilities on 6+ turn cooldowns. Each character has one.

Status Effects

Burn3 turns10% max HP damage per turn

Boss Fights

Bosses have multiphase encounters. A typical boss fight:

  1. Phase 1 — Standard combat with adds. Boss uses basic attack patterns.
  2. Phase 2 — At 60% HP, boss gains a new ability and spawns environmental hazards.
  3. Phase 3 — At 30% HP, boss enrages. Attack speed doubles. Telegraphed one-hit-kill moves.

Each boss has a gimmick — destroy specific crystals, survive until reinforcements arrive, or trigger environmental traps against them. The Steam listing promises "grand multiphase bossfights."

World of Veichne

The game world is a cyberpunk fantasy mashup. Think snow-covered neon streets, magical crystal towers rising above corporate districts, and ancient ruins buried under permafrost.

Key locations (from Steam page hints):

  • The Frostspire — a mega-corporation tower in the capital. Likely the first major area.
  • Weeping Tundra — frozen wasteland with buried ruins. Mid-game exploration zone.
  • Crystal Depths — underground caverns with magical crystal formations. Late-game area.
  • The Dreamsend — the game's namesake. A mysterious realm tied to the plot. Possibly the final area.

The world is divided into mission nodes on an overworld map (hub-based, not open world). Between missions, you return to a base camp where you can shop, upgrade gear, talk to characters, and accept side contracts.

Beginner's Guide

Getting Started

Your First 30 Minutes

The tutorial drops you into a simple combat encounter with Kael and Mira against a group of frost goblins. The game teaches movement, basic attack, ability use, and the cover system.

Don't skip the tutorial tooltips — the MOBA-ability system takes getting used to if you've only played traditional tactical RPGs.

Tips and Tricks

Early Game Priorities

  1. Rotate your roster. Early missions are forgiving. Bring characters you don't normally use to build their relationship and XP evenly.
  2. Save items for boss fights. Regular missions drop enough to get by. Use your best consumables on multiphase bosses.
  3. Invest passive points in movement first. +1 movement range on the hex grid is worth more than +5% damage, especially in early missions where positioning matters most.
  4. Explore every map thoroughly. Hidden chests contain passive points and relic items you cannot buy.

Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Treating it like a pure tactics game. The MOBA-ability cooldown system rewards ability rotation planning, not just positioning.
  • Ignoring elevation. A 15% damage bonus from high ground adds up over a long fight.
  • Not using traps. Traps are cheap, last 3 turns, and trigger on any enemy. Place them at chokepoints before engaging.
  • Saving ultimates too long. Ultimate abilities recharge after each mission, not each battle. Use them freely in tough fights.

System Requirements

No official requirements posted yet. Based on the 2.5D graphics style (not fully 3D), expect modest requirements:
