What Is Coco's Day Off?

Coco's Day Off is a charming browser-based puzzle game made for the Comfy Jam: Summer game jam. Developed by a team of four (Maxacre, windnightPlead, Luduturgist, StyxStream1000), it's a cozy sand-digging adventure where you play as Coco exploring a tropical island on their day off.

The premise is simple and relaxing: Coco has the day off and wants to explore the beach. Use your trusty shovel to dig up shells, bump into coral, and uncover your tropical island family. The game combines sandbox exploration with light puzzles — there are secrets to find, items to collect, and a story about family waiting beneath the surface.

The art style is colorful and whimsical, with a warm tropical palette that matches the laid-back summer theme. It's free to play directly in your browser.

How to Play Coco's Day Off

Explore the beach: Move Coco around the tropical island. Different areas of the beach have different types of sand, shells, and secrets. Walk up to anything interesting and press interact to investigate.

Dig for shells: Use your shovel to dig in suspicious spots. Shells are the main collectible — they come in different shapes, sizes, and colors. Some are common, others are rare. Collector types will want to find them all.

Solve sand puzzles: Some areas have puzzles that require arranging shells, activating coral in the right order, or finding hidden switches. These puzzles unlock new areas and story progression.

Buy powerups: Spend collected shells at the shop run by a guppy (who seems a bit untrustworthy). Powerups help you dig faster, reach new areas, and find rare shells.

Uncover the story: As you explore, you'll find clues about Coco's tropical island family. Piece together the story through environmental storytelling and collectible notes.

Tips and Tricks

Dig everywhere. If a spot looks slightly different — darker sand, a subtle glint, an unusual rock formation — dig there. Hidden items are everywhere.

Shell types matter. Common white shells are for buying basic items. Rare colored shells unlock special conversations and story beats. Don't spend rare shells on basic upgrades.

Talk to everyone. The island's residents (animals, fish, maybe a crab or two) all have things to say. Talk to them multiple times, especially after finding key items.

The shop guppy is shady but harmless. You'll wonder if you're being ripped off. You probably are, slightly. But the powerups are still worth buying for progression.

Check your inventory. Sometimes you pick up items that don't have an obvious use. Keep them anyway. They'll be needed for later puzzles.

Note: The shop is a work in progress. The developers have noted that the items shop doesn't work fully yet. Don't worry if you can't buy everything — the core experience is complete.
