Wishlist on SteamWhat Is WATERPUNK?
WATERPUNK is a roguelite action game set in a flooded, post-apocalyptic world where civilization fell to soulless machines. Developed by solo indie studio R_Games, it launches July 30, 2026 on Steam for Windows and Linux.
You play as a volunteer sent from an underwater bunker to the surface. Your job: explore rust-covered platforms, fight hostile machines, collect resources, and survive long enough to bring hope back to humanity. Each run is procedurally generated. Death is permanent — but you keep your meta-progress.
The hook is the day-night cycle. Some abilities only work during the day. Others only activate at night. The world shifts around you. What worked at dawn might leave you dead by midnight.
Story & Setting
Humanity lost the war. Machines rose up, cities drowned, and the few survivors retreated to underwater bunkers. Generations later, the surface is still a wasteland of collapsed structures and patrolling war machines. Resources are running out in the bunkers. Someone has to go up.
That someone is you.
The narrative unfolds through exploration and environmental storytelling. You find logs from previous expeditions, discover what happened to the old world, and piece together why the machines turned on their creators. Each successful run brings back not just resources, but fragments of the story.
Core Gameplay Loop
WATERPUNK follows the classic roguelite structure:
- Launch from base — Equip your loadout and head to the surface
- Explore procedurally generated levels — Rusted oil rigs, collapsed bridges, floating debris fields
- Fight machines — Combat is fast, movement is critical, death is swift
- Collect loot — Weapons, gadgets, upgrades, and resources
- Die or extract — If you die, you lose everything except meta-progress
- Upgrade your base — Spend resources on permanent upgrades that improve future runs
The day-night cycle adds a strategic layer. You don't control when it shifts — time moves forward relentlessly. You need a build that works across both phases, or accept that you'll be weaker for half the run.
Combat System
Combat in WATERPUNK is fast-paced and demanding. Enemies hit hard, ammo is有限, and positioning matters more than your gear.
Movement
Your mobility is your best defense. You can sprint, slide, jump, and dodge-roll. The arenas are multi-layered — platforms above, water below, narrow catwalks connecting them. Good movement keeps you alive when the bullets start flying.
Weapons
The game offers dozens of weapons. Based on available footage and descriptions:
| Weapon Type | Examples | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Pistols | Standard sidearm, burst pistol | General combat, early game |
| Rifles | Assault rifle, battle rifle | Mid-range engagements |
| Shotguns | Pump-action, auto-shotgun | Close quarters, crowded platforms |
| Energy Weapons | Plasma caster, laser rifle | Shielded enemies, long range |
| Explosives | Grenade launcher, rocket pods | Groups, armored targets |
| Specials | Harpoon gun, arc thrower | Utility, crowd control |
Weapons have randomized stats per run. A common assault rifle and a legendary one handle very differently.
Gadgets and Active Items
You can carry multiple gadgets alongside your weapons. These provide utility, damage, or survival options:
- Deployable shield — Creates a temporary barrier for cover
- Repair drone — Heals you over time
- Proximity mine — Deals damage to enemies that trigger it
- Grapple hook — Pulls you to ledges or pulls enemies toward you
- Smoke bomb — Breaks line of sight, lets you reposition
- EMP blast — Stuns machines in an area
- Turret — Deploys an automated gun that fires at enemies
Enemies
The machine army comes in varied forms. Footage shows:
- Watchers — Small flying drones, weak but swarm in groups
- Strikers — Humanoid combat bots, the standard enemy. They chase, flank, and take cover.
- Titans — Heavy units with armor plating and powerful weapons. Slow but devastating.
- Reapers — Stealth units that cloak and ambush. Audio cues are your warning.
- Bosses — Large unique machines with attack patterns and weak points
Day-Night Cycle System
This is WATERPUNK's signature mechanic. The game has a persistent clock that moves forward as you play. Each phase lasts roughly 10-15 minutes of real time.
Day Phase
Daytime is when you push forward. Visibility is good, enemy patrols are predictable, and you can spot resources from a distance. Certain perks and weapons deal bonus damage during daylight — usually precision or fire-based effects.
Day perks tend to favor: ranged damage, critical hit chance, resource detection, shield regeneration.
Night Phase
Night changes everything. Visibility drops. Enemy patrols change routes and become more aggressive. Some enemies only spawn at night. The game becomes more about holding position, managing resources, and surviving until dawn.
Night perks tend to favor: stealth bonuses, close-range damage, health regeneration, loot from kills.
Building Around the Cycle
You can't control the time of day. You can only prepare for both. A smart build includes at least one weapon and one gadget that performs well regardless of phase. Specializing entirely in day or night leaves you helpless for half the run.
Veteran players recommend a primary weapon for your strong phase and a secondary weapon / gadget that covers your weak phase.
Procedural Generation
No two runs are the same. Levels are stitched together from modular rooms and platforms, with enemy placement, loot drops, and environmental hazards all randomized.
The generation follows a difficulty curve — the deeper you go, the harder the enemies and the better the loot. Early platforms have basic Watchers and Strikers. Deeper areas introduce Titans, Reapers, and environmental threats like collapsing structures or electrified water.
Resource nodes, secret caches, and optional challenge rooms are scattered throughout. Exploration rewards are significant enough that rushing the objective is rarely optimal.
Meta-Progression and Base Upgrades
Death resets your equipment, but permanent upgrades carry over. You earn two types of resources:
- Scrap — Common, used for basic upgrades and consumables
- Tech Parts — Rare, used for significant permanent upgrades
Your base between runs has upgrade stations:
| Upgrade | Effect | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon Rack | Start each run with an extra weapon | Scrap |
| Armor Plating | Increase max HP by 25/50/75 | Scrap + Tech |
| Workshop | Unlock higher-tier weapon drops | Tech |
| Lab | Unlock new gadgets permanently | Tech |
| Comms Tower | Reveal more of the map on start | Scrap |
| Med Bay | Start each run with a free heal | Scrap |
| Power Grid | Day/Night cycle starts in your preferred phase | Tech |
Beginner's Guide
1. Focus on movement early
Don't stand still. Enemies in WATERPUNK track and lead shots. Constant movement — strafing, sliding, jumping between platforms — reduces damage significantly. Practice the dodge-roll timing. It has invincibility frames.
2. Build for both phases
Pick one day perk and one night perk early. Even if you prefer playing at night, you'll spend roughly half the run in daylight. A hybrid build is more consistent than an all-in.
3. Scavenge everything
Resource nodes respawn between runs (they're part of the level generation, not the persistent world). Loot everything you find. Scrap is the bottleneck for early upgrades.
4. Don't fight every fight
Some enemy groups can be bypassed. If you're low on health or ammo, route around tough patrols. The objective isn't to clear every room — it's to extract with resources.
5. Upgrade weapon rack first
Starting with two weapons instead of one doubles your combat options. It's the single biggest power increase per scrap spent.
6. Learn enemy audio cues
Reapers (stealth bots) make a distinct humming sound before decloaking. Titans have a heavy footstep rhythm. Watchers beep faster when they're about to explode. Audio tells give you a split second of warning.
7. Extract when you can
If you have valuable loot and the extraction point is close, take it. Greed is the top cause of death in roguelites. One successful extraction with moderate loot beats five deaths trying to clear the boss.
System Requirements
Minimum
| Component | Requirement |
|---|---|
| OS | Windows 7 or newer (x64) |
| Processor | Intel Core i3 |
| Memory | 2048 MB RAM |
| Graphics | 512 MB graphics card with WebGL support |
| DirectX | Version 9.0 |
| Storage | 200 MB available space |
Recommended
| Component | Requirement |
|---|---|
