What Is Alarion: The Ruined King?

Alarion: The Ruined King is a dark fantasy action game from developer SHADOW, targeting an April 2027 Steam release on Windows. The premise: years ago, Malachar betrayed King Alarion, performed a forbidden ritual, and tore open the Rift between the human world and the demon realm. Now the kingdom lies in ruin, and Alarion has clawed his way out of the grave as something neither truly living nor dead. Your job is to fight across a dying kingdom and end the reign of the man who caused its fall.

The combat is the selling point. SHADOW is building a close-quarters system where every attack matters: dodge, block, parry, counter, and punish openings with brutal executions. Layered on top is a Blood power meter that charges through combat and funds devastating supernatural abilities. It reads as a darker, more aggressive cousin of the soulslike formula, with bosses designed to demand different approaches rather than one universal dodge-spam answer.

The Story So Far

Every fallen kingdom needs a betrayer, and this one has Malachar. The betrayal ritual tore the Rift open, and everything wrong with the world flows from that wound: demons pouring through, warriors corrupted, cities burning, the capital in shattered pieces. Alarion's return through his own royal blood is the twist that sets the tone. The instrument of the kingdom's defense is now an undead king wearing a crown nobody else can touch.

The world itself tells the story in chapters. Crypts, dead prisons, burning cities, ruined fortresses, corrupted cathedrals, and the shattered remains of the capital each reveal another piece of the kingdom's downfall. Expect the environment to carry the lore the way soulslikes do, through what you walk through rather than what cutscenes tell you.

How to Play Alarion: The Ruined King

Combat Fundamentals

The combat triangle is sword, shield, and axe, and the system rewards disciplined play over aggression:

Parry beats block for skilled players. Blocking soaks damage but leaves you pinned. A parry opens a counter window, and counters are where your damage comes from. Against enemies you know, parry timing is the skill ceiling.

Punish the opening, then execute. Broken defenses create punish windows, and executions finish enemies off in style. The store description calls it breaking through defenses and punishing openings, which in practice means: do not just chip health, create the opening and cash it in.

Every attack matters. The explicit design statement. Enemies can overwhelm you if you lose control of the fight, so the game punishes button mashing hard. Swings you cannot cancel will get you caught mid-animation.

Dodge with intent. The demons and corrupted warriors telegraph their attacks. The dodge exists to reposition you into a counter angle, not just to move you out of the hitbox.

The Blood Power System

Combat charges your Blood meter, and spending it turns Alarion from a knight into something worse. Described abilities include tearing apart souls, unleashing powerful blood attacks, and turning the power of the Rift against your enemies.

Three habits to build around the meter:

Bank it for bosses. Regular encounters should be won with fundamentals. Walking into a boss arena with a full Blood meter means an opening burst that chunks a third of the fight before it starts.

Use it as a panic button early. While you are still learning enemy movesets, spending Blood to end a bad situation beats dying with a full meter.

Remember it charges on offense. Passive play does not charge the meter. The system is designed to reward aggression, which is a deliberate counterweight to the cautious parry game.

Supernatural Traversal and Puzzles

Alarion's abilities are not only for killing. The description lists moving massive obstacles, activating ancient mechanisms, and opening paths ordinary warriors could never reach. Read that as gated exploration: paths you spot in chapter one may open once you gain the right ability, and the kingdom rewards backtracking with secrets. The Rift powers that tore the world apart are also the tools you use to navigate its wreckage.

Facing Bosses

Bosses demand different approaches, per the official description, and the enemy roster goes beyond demons: powerful warriors, monstrous creatures, and corrupted knights. Practical boss prep:

Learn the first phase without committing resources. Do not burn your Blood meter on attempt one. Watch the attack patterns first.

Corrupted knights fight like you. Humanoid enemies use the same parry-and-punish logic you do, so they punish your bad habits the hardest.

Monstrous creatures change the geometry. Big enemies control space. Dodging backward is not enough; the fight is about positioning relative to the arena.

Exploit openings, never force them. The combat system gives you windows and punishes greed. Same doctrine as regular enemies, just faster and with less margin.

The Kingdom: What to Expect From the World

Each chapter moves through a different ruin type, and the official material names them explicitly: forgotten crypts, dead prisons, burning cities, ruined fortresses, corrupted cathedrals, and the shattered capital. That progression reads as a difficulty curve in disguise. Crypts and prisons will be the early chapters with basic demons, while the capital confrontation with Malachar closes the arc.

New environments, enemies, challenges, and secrets wait beyond the next path, and the chapter structure suggests a linear campaign rather than an open world. Single-player only, no multiplayer features on the Steam listing.

Tips and Tricks for New Players

Learn parry windows before learning bosses. The combat system is built around the parry-counter rhythm, and every enemy list punishes the same bad timing. Drill it on trash mobs early.

Full Blood meter at the boss door. Regular fights charge the meter; spend it where the health pool is biggest. Opening bursts shortcut the hardest phase.

Watch humanoid enemies closely. Corrupted knights and warriors mirror your own toolkit. Whatever they punish in you is a habit to unlearn.

Revisit locked paths after new chapters. Blood abilities open mechanisms and move obstacles that blocked earlier routes. Secrets you skipped come back with interest.

Keep one Blood charge as insurance in new areas. Until you know an area's enemy mix, an emergency burst beats a greedy combo that gets interrupted.

System Requirements

The requirements are modest, and that is good news for a 2027 release.

TierSpecs
MinimumWindows 10 or 11, Intel i5-3570K / AMD FX-8350, 8 GB RAM, GTX 770 2GB / Radeon R9 280X 3GB, DirectX 12, 10 GB storage
RecommendedWindows 10 or 11, Intel i7-8700K / AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB RAM, GTX 1660 6GB, DirectX 12, 10 GB storage

A GTX 770 is a 2013 card. If the final game ships near these targets, almost anything from the last decade plays it at acceptable settings. The 10 GB storage footprint is small for the genre.

Platform and Feature Notes

Partial controller support is listed, so expect keyboard and mouse as the primary path with controller support that may improve by launch. Steam Cloud and Family Sharing are both enabled. No macOS, Linux, or console versions are announced as of this writing, and no price has been published yet. Wishlist it if the demo-to-launch track matters to you; SHADOW has not announced a demo.

FAQ

When does Alarion: The Ruined King release? April 2027 on Steam. No exact date has been announced.

How much will it cost? No price yet. The Steam page has no price listing as of November 2026.

Is it soulslike? Close, with a twist. Parry-heavy melee combat and demanding bosses fit the formula, but the Blood power system adds an aggressive resource layer that pure soulslikes lack.

Is there multiplayer? No. Single-player only.

Who is Malachar? The betrayer and final target. He performed the forbidden ritual that opened the Rift and destroyed the kingdom. You fight toward him across the whole campaign.

What platforms is it on? Windows only, for now. Steam Cloud and Family Sharing are supported. Console and other PC platform versions have not been announced.

What should I play while waiting? If the premise hooks you, the obvious gap-fillers are the darker soulslike action games with parry-centric combat and execution finishes. The Blood power layer means it sits somewhere between soulslikes and character-action games like DMC-style brawlers, so both shelves are worth browsing until April 2027.
